Choir Rehearsals
THE ORPHEUS MALE CHORUS OF PHOENIX REHEARSES EVERY TUESDAY EVENING FROM 7:00 TO 9:30 P.M.
Begining the second week of August and ending the first week in May. Rehearsals will be held at the Cross Roads United Methodist Church located at 7901 N. Central Ave., Phoenix, AZ 85020.

What is the Orpheus Male Chorus of Phoenix?
Founded in 1929, the Orpheus Male Chorus of Phoenix is Arizona’s longest-running chorus. For nearly a century, men from every generation and every walk of life have united around a shared pursuit of artistic excellence, creating powerful choral performances, lifelong friendships, and meaningful connections that extend far beyond the concert stage.
Who can join?
Any male with a tenor, baritone, or bass voice who enjoys singing is welcome to audition.
Many of our members are:
- Former high school choir singers
- College music alumni
- Church choir members
- Men returning to singing after many years away
- Experienced choral singers looking for a musical challenge
You don’t have to know anyone before you arrive.
Do I have to be an experienced singer?
No.
Some members have extensive musical backgrounds. Others haven’t sung in years.
If you’re willing to learn, rehearse consistently, and sing with enthusiasm, you’ll fit right in.
Do I have to read music?
No.
Reading music is helpful but not required.
Many singers join with little or no music-reading experience and improve through rehearsals, section support, recordings, and guidance from our Artistic Director and experienced members.
What happens at my first rehearsal?
You’ll be welcomed by members of the chorus and introduced to our Artistic Director.
Before rehearsal begins, you’ll complete a brief vocal placement.
This isn’t a formal performance audition.
You’ll simply sing a few comfortable vocal exercises so we can determine whether you’re a tenor, baritone, or bass.
No preparation is necessary.
When Can I Join?
New singers join at the beginning of each concert cycle:
- August
- January
- April
These open rehearsals are the best opportunity to become part of the chorus from the very beginning of a concert season.
What kind of music does Orpheus perform?
Our repertoire spans many musical styles, including:
- Classical masterworks
- Contemporary choral music
- Broadway
- Folk music
- Spirituals
- Americana
- Holiday favorites
- Newly commissioned works
Each season is built around a unique artistic theme that connects the music through storytelling and shared experiences.

Each semester also includes a Saturday music retreat.
How often do we perform?
Members participate in several major concert events each season, including:
- Holidays with Orpheus
- Spring Concert Series
- Legacy, our annual collaboration with the Phoenix Children’s Chorus
Many singers also choose to participate in community performances throughout the year, including performances for veterans, seniors, schools, civic organizations, and community events.
What does membership cost?
Membership dues are $160 per semester.
Dues help support:
- Artistic Director
- Accompanist
- Music purchases
- Rehearsal facilities
- Concert production
- Administrative operations
Payment plans are available.
What if I can't afford dues?
We never want finances to prevent someone from singing.
Financial assistance and scholarships are available for members experiencing hardship.

Besides singing, how can I help?
Orpheus is a volunteer-powered nonprofit.
Members strengthen the chorus by:
- Inviting new singers
- Bringing family and friends to concerts
- Helping at performances and identifying volunteers
- Assisting with marketing
- Volunteering at events
- Supporting fundraising efforts
- Serving on committees
What makes Orpheus different?

Is Orpheus LGBTQ+ friendly?
Absolutely.
Orpheus welcomes singers of every background.
Many of our members are gay men. Many are straight.
Our chorus reflects a wide variety of experiences, professions, beliefs, and life stories.
What matters here isn’t who you are outside rehearsal.
It’s that you love to sing, support one another, and strive for artistic excellence together.
What does Orpheus do beyond concerts?
A lot.
As an Orpheus singer, you’ll do more than perform on stage. You’ll use music to enrich lives, mentor young singers, build community, and represent Arizona around the world. Together, we:
- Perform throughout Greater Phoenix.
- Bring music to veterans, seniors, and community organizations.
- Share therapeutic music with people living with dementia and Parkinson’s disease.
- Sing alongside Phoenix Children’s Chorus in our annual Legacy concert.
- Inspire young singers through our Tenor-Bass Festival.
- Support the next generation through choral music scholarships.
- Tour internationally every three years as cultural ambassadors.
